Maria Amalia of Saxony was queen consort of Naples and Sicily (from 1738) and, after 1759, queen consort of Spain as the wife of Charles III. A daughter of Augustus III of Poland and Maria Josepha of Austria, she was raised at the Dresden court and, in a dynastic arrangement, married at fourteen, developing a close and influential relationship with her husband. Known for her direct involvement in state affairs, she took an active part in Neapolitan and Spanish politics, joining the council of state after the birth of her first son. She intervened in ministerial appointments and foreign-policy decisions, including efforts to keep Naples neutral during the War of the Austrian Succession. As a patron of the arts and public works, she played a central role in major architectural projects of the kingdom: she supported construction of the Palace of Caserta, the Teatro di San Carlo, the Palace of Capodimonte and the renovations of the Royal Palace of Madrid. She introduced porcelain production to Naples and was a patron of the court musicians. She died in 1760 of tuberculosis, leaving a legacy of cultural patronage and a strong political presence at the Bourbon courts, with influence visible in the institutions and grand buildings of southern Italy and Madrid.
