Albert Henry DeSalvo was a criminal associated with the killings known as the “Boston Strangler” crimes, a series of homicides that terrorized the Boston area in the early 1960s. In the press and popular culture he became notorious for being identified as responsible for multiple deaths of women who were found strangled or assaulted, a case that came to symbolize urban fear and investigative failures of the era. DeSalvo’s life included domestic violence within his family, juvenile delinquency and military service in the United States, where he served for eight years and started a family. He was convicted of minor offenses and, in 1967, received a life sentence for unrelated crimes; in February of that year he briefly escaped from Bridgewater State Hospital and was soon recaptured. Although widely identified as the Boston Strangler and the subject of films and news reports, he was never formally tried or convicted for all the murders attributed to the Strangler; subsequent investigations and DNA testing prompted debate and reassessment of authorship, and the inquiry remained open for decades. DeSalvo was killed in prison in 1973, and his name remains tied to discussions about responsibility, forensic evidence and media coverage of high-profile crimes.
