Alec Dankworth is an English bassist and composer, known for his work in contemporary jazz and for belonging to a prominent musical family. The son of musicians John Dankworth and Cleo Laine, he graduated from Berklee before joining his parents’ quintet, subsequently performing internationally on tours across the United States, Australia and Europe during the 1980s and 1990s. Throughout his career he has collaborated with notable figures such as Dave Brubeck, with whom he performed and recorded, as well as Abdullah Ibrahim, Nigel Kennedy and a range of British and international jazz artists. He led his own quartet and co-led the Generation Band with his father, recording at least two albums with the group. Dankworth has also taken part in significant projects and recordings, including arrangements of works by Duke Ellington and performances with musicians such as Ginger Baker in the Ginger Baker Jazz Confusion. He is active as an educator, working with the National Youth Jazz Collective and maintaining a regular presence on the UK jazz scene.
