Aleksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin was a Russian poet, playwright and prose writer of the Romantic era, widely regarded as the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature. Born into the nobility, his work renewed literary language by using colloquial speech and combining drama, romance and satire, creating a narrative style that influenced the entire subsequent Russian literary tradition. Author of poems, novellas and plays, Pushkin produced central works such as Eugene Onegin, Boris Godunov, The Queen of Spades, The Bronze Horseman and The Prisoner of the Caucasus. His verse novel Eugene Onegin, published in serial form between 1825 and 1832, became a touchstone of Russian “realistic romanticism” and served as the basis for Tchaikovsky’s famous opera. Politically, his progressive ideas and ties to members of the Decembrist circle led to exile and years of censorship; nonetheless he composed important works during this period and regained standing after receiving imperial pardon. Married to Natalya Goncharova, his life was cut short by a duel in 1837. Pushkin’s legacy includes helping to consolidate a Russian national literature, a direct influence on writers such as Gogol, Lermontov and Turgenev, and a lasting presence in Russia’s literary and musical culture.
