Alexander Pope was one of the most celebrated English poets of the early eighteenth century, recognized for his mastery of satire and for his translations of Homer. A central figure of Augustan neoclassicism, he became known for discursive and wryly refined works such as An Essay on Criticism, The Rape of the Lock and The Dunciad, which shaped the literary taste of his time and produced aphorisms still quoted in everyday English. Born into a Catholic family, his education was shaped by legal restrictions and by a largely self-taught grounding in classical and modern literature. Fragile health and short stature are part of his biography and affected his social isolation, but did not prevent his intense intellectual life and participation in literary circles, including friendships with authors such as Jonathan Swift and Joseph Addison. The financial success of his Homeric translations allowed him to establish himself in Twickenham, where he created gardens and a grotto that became part of his tangible legacy. His satirical work, formal precision and taste for learning secured Pope a lasting place in the English literary tradition, influencing subsequent generations of poets and critics.
