Félix-Alexandre Guilmant was a prominent French organist, composer, and teacher whose work shaped sacred and concert music at the turn of the 19th into the 20th century. As titular organist of La Trinité in Paris for thirty years, Guilmant was noted for his gift for improvisation and his use of Gregorian melody, developing a style that married liturgical expressiveness with symphonic scope. As a virtuoso he undertook extensive international tours, becoming one of the first French organists to attract audiences in the United States and Canada with memorable recital series that disseminated the organ repertoire of his generation. His compositional output is largely devoted to the instrument: sonatas, collections of liturgical pieces, and pedagogical works conceived for the great French organs of his day. Committed to rescuing older music and to musical education, he published essential anthologies of early organ music and co-founded the Schola Cantorum in Paris in 1894, an institution that influenced teaching and the recovery of repertoire. As a professor at the Conservatoire de Paris he trained a significant generation of organists, among them Marcel Dupré, leaving a pedagogical and editorial legacy that remains a touchstone in the organ world.
