Walter Marty Schirra Jr. was a naval aviator, test pilot and American astronaut, known for being the first person to travel to space on three separate missions. A 1945 graduate of the Naval Academy, he served in the final months of World War II and flew combat missions in the Korean War, gaining operational experience and shooting down enemy aircraft. He later made his mark as a test pilot, becoming the first to employ and fire the AIM‑9 Sidewinder missile.

Selected in 1959 as a member of NASA’s first group of astronauts, Schirra worked on life‑support systems, spacesuits and the Project Mercury capsule. He flew on Mercury‑Atlas 8 (1962), completing six orbits; took part in Gemini VI‑A (1965); and commanded Apollo 7 (1968), the first crewed Apollo mission to test the command module in Earth orbit.

He retired from the Navy and NASA in 1969 and worked as a consultant and CBS commentator, covering Apollo mission broadcasts. He also held executive positions in private companies and coauthored works about his biography and the history of naval aviation. He died in 2007; his legacy remains tied to the pioneering era of crewed spaceflight and the overlap between military aviation and space exploration.
