Jim Sharman is an Australian director, screenwriter and producer with an established career in theatre and film, responsible for more than 70 productions and internationally recognized as co‑author and director of the stage show The Rocky Horror Show and its film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. A graduate of the production course at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), he became known in the 1960s for avant‑garde work and for pioneering rock musicals, directing productions of Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar and creating shows that toured Australia, London, the United States and Japan. In Australian theatre, Sharman directed seminal plays and premiered works by local playwrights, including several stagings of Patrick White that helped revive the writer’s career. His creative partnership with designer Brian Thomson produced memorable sets and stage concepts, which were also reused in film adaptations. Beyond theatre productions, he directed films such as Shock Treatment and The Night the Prowler, adapted from Patrick White, and held artistic director roles at festivals, founding companies that favored radical stagings and premieres by new authors. His career is associated with renewing the Australian dramatic repertoire and promoting the international circulation of national productions.
