Jean Alexandre Louis Promio was a French cinematographer and film director, a leading figure among the earliest newsreel cameramen and a direct collaborator of the Lumière brothers. Born in Lyon and trained in several disciplines, Promio was the operator responsible for the Lumière cinematographic service and for training the company's first cameramen from 1896 onward. During the long trips commissioned by the Lumières, he shot news reports and documentary views in many countries, with notable work in the United States, Italy, North Africa and the Middle East.
Promio is often associated with popularizing the travelling camera—especially panoramas filmed from boats—and he systematized its use, making it both a theoretical and practical technique for the new medium. He also staged scenes inspired by 19th‑century academic painting, producing historical and religious series for the nascent entertainment industry.
In later years he held managerial roles in film companies and attempted to develop panoramas and photoramas; he then worked in photography and advertising in Algeria, where he organized extensive photographic collections. His contribution lies in both technical and aesthetic innovations for filming motion and in the documentary output that helped form the visual catalogue of early cinema.
