Alfred Adler

Alfred Adler was an Austrian physician and psychotherapist, founder of individual psychology and a central figure in the early decades of the psychoanalytic movement. Trained at the University of Vienna, he initially worked in general practice and psychiatry and collaborated with Freud before breaking with him over the emphasis placed on sexuality. He developed a theory focused on the role of the social environment, future goals, and the feeling of inferiority as drivers of human behavior. Adler introduced enduring concepts such as inferiority complexes, compensation, and the striving for superiority—understood as a drive for self-improvement—and emphasized the importance of social interest, the human tendency toward cooperation and the common good. He also proposed preventive and educational interventions, promoting child guidance centers and public lectures on family education in European cities. Recognized both for his theoretical contributions and for bringing his ideas to the public, Adler left a legacy in psychotherapy, child guidance, and pedagogy, influencing practices aimed at promoting social development and treating neuroses from a teleological and community-oriented perspective.
