Charles Dickens was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era and a central figure in nineteenth-century literature. Trained as a journalist and editor, he signed his early work as Boz and edited a weekly periodical for two decades while producing novels, short stories, articles and an extensive correspondence. His pioneering use of serial publication transformed reading habits and generated great public anticipation, besides allowing him to adjust plots in response to readers’ reactions. Author of immortal titles — including The Pickwick Papers, A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities — Dickens combined humor, satire and a keen social awareness. His narratives, often set in Victorian London, expose inequalities, harsh working conditions and the impact of institutions on individual lives. An activist through his writing, he campaigned for child rights and education. The popularity of his public readings cemented his status as a cultural celebrity; the adjective “dickensian” came to denote social realities and characters that evoke his literary world. His legacy endures in the continual adaptation and readership of his novels.
