Alfred Merrill Worden was a U.S. Air Force officer, test pilot, aerospace engineer and astronaut, best known for serving as command module pilot on the Apollo 15 mission in July 1971. A West Point graduate with master’s degrees in aerospace engineering and instrumentation from the University of Michigan, he built a career as a fighter pilot and test pilot instructor before being selected for NASA’s astronaut corps in 1965. During Apollo 15, Worden remained in lunar orbit for three days, conducting photographic observations and scientific experiments from the command module, and performed an extravehicular activity during the return to retrieve cassettes mounted outside the spacecraft. The mission was a technical success and expanded the scope of scientific exploration of the Moon. After the return, the crew’s public image was damaged by the unauthorized carriage of postal covers, which led to reprimands and ended their chances for further spaceflights. Worden stayed with NASA until 1975 and afterward worked in the private sector and promoted space exploration and science education until his death in 2020.
