Alfred Grandidier was a French naturalist and explorer whose work focused primarily on the study of Madagascar. After initial travels in South America and India, he reached Madagascar in 1865 and devoted much of the rest of his life to researching the island, supported by the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle and the Société de géographie.

He published numerous works on Malagasy geology, zoology, and ethnography, including the ambitious multi-volume L’Histoire physique, naturelle et politique de Madagascar, a project completed under the direction of his son Guillaume. He described many species of insects, mollusks, birds, reptiles, and mammals, and left significant collections that enriched scientific institutions.

His studies helped draw French political attention to Madagascar in the late 19th century; he acted as an adviser to explorers and assisted colonial expeditions. He received scientific honours, was elected to the Académie des sciences in 1885, and served as president of the Société de géographie from 1901 to 1905. The mineral grandidierite and several botanical genera were named in his honour.
