Alfred Jodl was a German military officer who served in the leadership of the Nazi regime and acted as Chief of Operations of the High Command of the Wehrmacht (OKW) during World War II. His long career, begun in the artillery and consolidated between the wars, brought him to central positions in the planning and conduct of military operations from 1939 onward. Among his most controversial actions were signed orders that provided for the summary treatment of political commissars and of captured enemy commando forces, as well as documents connected to the deportation of civilians in occupied territories. On 7 May 1945, as Hitler’s designated government representative, he signed the unconditional surrender of the German forces. Detained after the end of the conflict, he was tried by the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity, and executed in 1946. Subsequent appeals and rulings in Germany reexamined aspects of his conviction, prompting debate over the responsibility and trial of senior officers. Jodl’s legacy remains defined by his command role in the Nazi military apparatus and by orders that linked him to serious violations of the laws of war.
