André Courrèges was a French fashion designer whose work had a deep impact on 20th-century fashion. Trained in civil engineering, he worked for a decade with Cristóbal Balenciaga before founding his own haute couture house in 1961, where he developed a futuristic, minimalist aesthetic known as Space Age. His 1964 collection and subsequent proposals accelerated the revolution in lengths and shapes: Courrèges experimented with new materials such as PVC, emphasized the use of white and high-contrast color pairings, popularized tall boots, and helped promote the miniskirt alongside figures such as Mary Quant. In 1969 he introduced the idea of the “second skin,” reaffirming his interest in technical cuts and pure silhouettes. Beyond runway work, he entered notable partnerships and institutional projects: in 1972 he designed the official uniforms for the Munich Olympic Games and launched his first perfume, Empreinte. Decades later he sustained his influence by inviting collaborators like Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and, in 2011, transferred the brand to new investors, leaving a legacy of innovation and modernity in haute couture.
