André Weil was one of the most influential mathematicians of the twentieth century, whose contributions profoundly shaped number theory and algebraic geometry. His career encompassed teaching and research at several international institutions — including Aligarh, the University of São Paulo, the University of Chicago and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton — and included a leadership role in the Bourbaki group, which helped renew the outlook of modern mathematics. Weil introduced foundational ideas: the connection between algebraic geometry and number theory, the adèle concept and the use of height functions that led to the Mordell–Weil theorem. During World War II he produced, under adverse circumstances, central results such as the proof of the Riemann hypothesis for local zeta functions and developed foundations that propelled cohomology and other modern tools. The conjectures attributed to him — the so-called Weil conjectures — spurred decades of subsequent work, culminating in decisive contributions by Grothendieck, Deligne and others. In addition to technical research, he published influential books and introduced concepts and notations widely adopted, leaving a lasting legacy in how arithmetic and geometric problems are approached.
