Andrea Palma, born Guadalupe Bracho Pérez-Gavilán, was one of the leading actresses of the so-called Golden Age of Mexican cinema. Born into a family connected to the arts — with filmmaker Julio Bracho among her siblings and cousins who became known in Hollywood — she began in theater and fashion before moving definitively into film, adopting the stage name that would make her famous. Her role as Rosario in La mujer del puerto (1934) established her as an immediate star; from there she moved with distinction between leading roles and complex character parts. She portrayed historical figures such as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and accepted antagonistic and highly dramatic roles, showing versatility across melodramas, genre films, and international co-productions. In the 1940s and 1950s she established herself as a character actress, appearing in notable titles — including collaborations with respected directors and work alongside names such as Ninón Sevilla and Luis Buñuel. From the late 1950s she also focused on television and theater, maintaining an artistic presence until she retired for health reasons in 1979. Her cultural legacy lies in the creation of intense female characters and in her contribution to Mexican cinema and television, leaving a filmography representative of the film and television output of the following decades.
