David McDowell Brown was a United States Navy captain, physician, and NASA astronaut whose career combined aerospace medicine and naval aviation. He earned a biology degree from the College of William & Mary and a medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School, then joined the Navy as a flight surgeon, serving with naval squadrons and embarked on aircraft carriers. He later trained as a pilot, qualified as a naval aviator, and distinguished himself as an instructor and test pilot. He logged more than 2,700 flight hours, with extensive experience in high-performance aircraft. Selected by NASA in 1996, he became a mission specialist and supported the development of payloads for the International Space Station before joining the crew of STS-107. In January–February 2003 he took part in the research flight that conducted about 80 experiments over nearly 16 days. Brown died when the Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart during reentry, on the only spaceflight he flew. He was posthumously awarded honors including the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, and an asteroid, a lunar crater, and academic facilities were named in his memory. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
