Laurent Tailhade was a French writer and polemicist, known for his satirical poetry, incendiary essays and translations. Born into a family of magistrates, he broke early with bourgeois expectations to live in the capital and devote himself to literature. His poetic work, influenced by Parnassianism, coexists with a libertarian and anticlerical streak expressed in poems and texts of a provocative and often insulting tone. He became a controversial public figure by praising anarchist acts—an 1893 remark of his about an attack made him notorious—and, ironically, was also the victim of political violence. He attended literary salons and maintained friendships with figures such as Verlaine and Aristide Bruant, while cultivating a reputation as a duelist and public provocateur, gaining notoriety through scandals such as the episode in Camaret. Among his best-known titles are Au Pays du mufle (1891) and Imbéciles et gredins (1900), in which argotic verve is combined with an erudite language. A journalist and pamphleteer, he took part in antimilitarist initiatives and was imprisoned for inflammatory articles. After the First World War, his work influenced later generations and was cited as a precursor by voices of Dadaism and Surrealism.
