Andrew Jackson was a planter, slave trader, soldier, and American statesman who served as President of the United States from 1829 to 1837. Earlier he rose to prominence as a general, notably for the victory at New Orleans (1815), and for leading campaigns that extended territory under U.S. control, including actions in the Creek War and the First Seminole War. He became a central figure in party politics by helping to establish the democratic tradition that eventually became the Democratic Party. As president he cultivated an image as a defender of the “common man” and acted in defense of national unity, but his policies also included authoritarian and racist measures. His economic actions were marked by his veto of the Second Bank of the United States, the institution’s progressive dismantling, and the payment of the national debt in 1835; politically, he established the patronage system. The most controversial episode of his presidency was his signing of the Indian Removal Act (1830), which forced the relocation of Native peoples in the South and resulted in great suffering and many deaths. A plantation owner, Jackson supported and profited from the institution of slavery. His legacy remains polarizing: he is celebrated by some as a champion of popular democracy and criticized by others for authoritarian practices and racist policies.
