Andrew Jackson Young Jr. is an American politician, diplomat, and activist whose career began in the Protestant ministry and rose to prominence in the civil rights movement. As executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, he was a close ally and adviser to Martin Luther King Jr., serving as a strategist and negotiator in key campaigns — Birmingham, St. Augustine, Selma, and Atlanta — and taking part in the struggle that produced the civil rights and voting-rights legislation of the 1960s. His move into elective politics brought Young to Congress representing the state of Georgia and, under President Jimmy Carter, to appointment as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, the first African American to hold that post. On the international stage he played a role in negotiations toward ending the conflict in Rhodesia and in the political opening that led to the creation of Zimbabwe, a position that attracted controversy because of his support for certain local leaders. After leaving formal public office, Young founded and joined several organizations devoted to public policy and advocacy, remaining an influential voice on racial and diplomatic matters. His legacy combines trusted service in the civil rights movement, public service at national and international levels, and involvement in political transition processes in southern Africa.
