Andrew Hiram "Andy" Simpkins was an American jazz double bassist known for his long career as an ensemble and studio musician. He rose to prominence as a member of the trio The Three Sounds from 1956 to 1968, a period in which he took part in recordings and tours that established him on the modern jazz circuit.
Afterwards he joined pianist George Shearing’s orchestra until 1974 and later accompanied singer Sarah Vaughan from 1979 to 1989, standing out for his rhythmic steadiness and sensitive vocal accompaniment. Based in Los Angeles, he also became in demand as a studio musician, collaborating with artists such as Carmen McRae, Anita O'Day, Stéphane Grappelli and Monty Alexander.
He recorded three albums as a leader and appeared as a sideman on records with varying impact, including projects by pop and jazz artists. His career was marked by versatility between live performance and studio work, leaving a reputation as a reliable accompanist and first-rate musician in the twentieth-century jazz scene.
