Anna Collomb was one of the victims of Henri Désiré Landru, a French serial killer active during and after World War I. Identified among the women who answered marriage advertisements, her disappearance is part of the set of cases that led to Landru’s investigation and arrest. Anna Collomb’s case drew public attention for its role in the trial that exposed a scheme of seduction followed by the appropriation of victims’ property and, according to the prosecution, murder. Documents seized at the accused’s residence included notes and correspondence linking several victims to the same man, which supported the collective indictment. Landru’s trial became a national sensation in postwar France, where social outrage over wartime losses was still intense. Condemned to death, Landru was executed in 1922; the episode remained in the public memory and inspired cultural works that reconstructed or reinterpreted the events.
