Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge, was a member of the British royal family and a military and administrative figure of the early 19th century. A son of King George III and Queen Charlotte, he held the dukedom from 1801 until his death, occupied senior military posts—rising to field marshal—and received several royal honours, including the Order of the Garter and the GCB. He was appointed viceroy (regent) of Hanover from 1816 to 1837, representing Kings George IV and William IV during the personal union between the United Kingdom and Hanover; with Victoria’s accession in 1837 the Hanoverian crown passed to another branch, ending his executive role in the principality. He married late, in 1818, to Princess Augusta of Hesse‑Kassel, siring three children who ensured his dynastic continuity, including his successor as Duke of Cambridge. His legacy is notable for linking the British monarchy with the German royal houses and for the military and ceremonial service he rendered throughout his life. He was initially buried at Kew; his remains were later moved to St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
