Anne Wiazemsky was a Franco‑German actress and writer of Russian descent, known both for a striking film debut and for a distinguished literary career. Discovered at 18 by Robert Bresson in Au hasard Balthazar (1966), she became a central figure of auteur cinema through performances in Jean‑Luc Godard’s films — to whom she was married for a time — including La Chinoise, Week End and One Plus One. Her appearances on screen and in critical discussion helped establish films now regarded as landmarks of 1960s cinematic counterculture.
Beyond acting, Wiazemsky built an award‑winning literary career. The author of several novels and memoirs, she received honors such as the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens and the Grand Prix du roman from the Académie française, and some of her works were adapted for the screen. Her writing often engages with personal experience, including her youth on film sets and the intersection of private life and artistic creation.
Daughter of diplomat and former Russian prince Yvan Wiazemsky and granddaughter of the novelist François Mauriac, her biography blends literary lineage with an international upbringing. Over the decades she also worked on screenplays and directed television documentaries, leaving a legacy across both cinema and literature. She died in 2017 of breast cancer.
