Anthony Braxton is an American composer and multi-instrumentalist known for his experimental work and for expanding the boundaries between composition and improvisation. A central figure in Chicago’s creative movement, he was an important member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and gained critical attention with the LP For Alto (1969), regarded as a milestone for being one of the first albums comprising entirely solo saxophone.
Prolific, Braxton produced hundreds of recordings and compositions spanning jazz, contemporary music, electronics, and opera. He developed theoretical systems—among them the so-called “language music” and the Tri-Axium Writings—and conceived long-running series such as Ghost Trance Music and the Trillium Opera Complex, as well as employing sound programming in works like Diamond Curtain Wall.
He received a MacArthur Fellowship and the title of NEA Jazz Master, taught at institutions including Mills College and Wesleyan University, and founded the Tri-Centric Foundation to preserve and enable cross-idiomatic productions. His legacy includes an extensive discography, a distinctive body of theoretical work, and a strong influence on generations of improvisers and contemporary composers.
