Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier was a French nobleman and chemist who was fundamental to the chemical revolution in the 18th century, and who had great influence on the history of chemistry and on the history of biology. He is considered in popular literature as the 'father of modern chemistry' (pai da química moderna). He was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1788.
It is widely accepted that his greatest achievement in chemistry was to change the science from a qualitative to a quantitative perspective. However, Lavoisier is best remembered for discovering the role of oxygen in combustion, refuting the phlogiston theory, and for enunciating the principle of conservation of matter (although the Russian Mikhail Lomonossov did so 14 years earlier).
Moreover, he identified and named oxygen (1778) and hydrogen (1783), helped in the establishment of the metric system, wrote the first list of chemical elements and collaborated in the reform of chemical nomenclature. He predicted the existence of silicon (1787) and was also the first to establish sulfur as an element (1777) rather than a compound. Finally, he discovered that although matter changes its form, mass remains the same.
