Geraldine Ferraro was an American lawyer, legislator and public figure whose career helped open doors for women in politics. A former teacher with a law degree from Fordham University, she worked in the office of the Queens County district attorney, leading a newly created victims unit focused on sex crimes, child abuse and domestic violence. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1978, she represented a Queens district from 1979 to 1985, advancing measures on pay equity and protection of women’s pensions.

In 1984 she rose to national prominence when chosen as the Democratic Party’s vice-presidential nominee, running on a ticket with Walter Mondale — the first woman to be nominated for that office by a major U.S. party. The selection also underscored her visibility as a prominent Italian American, although the campaign faced controversy over financial issues.

After the election, she remained active publicly: she ran for the U.S. Senate, served as a U.S. representative to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights during the Clinton administration, and continued her career as an author and political commentator. Her legacy is associated with expanding women’s presence in national politics and defending women’s rights.
