Christopher Isherwood was an English novelist, playwright, screenwriter and essayist who became a naturalized American, best known for works that depict 1930s Berlin and for his prolific literary activity throughout the twentieth century. His accounts and fictions about the city — including Mr. Norris Changes Trains and the collection Goodbye to Berlin — directly influenced later plays and adaptations such as I Am a Camera and the musical/film Cabaret, establishing his reputation as a chronicler of a period of freedom and prewar tension.
Over his life he produced a diverse body of work: novels, plays written in collaboration with W. H. Auden, autobiographies, translations and books on spirituality, notably translations and writings related to Vedanta and the Bhagavad Gita. His autobiographical work Christopher and His Kind provides a personal testimony about his experiences, identity and the cultural context from the 1930s to the 1970s.
Open about his sexual orientation, Isherwood lived for many years with the artist Don Bachardy, forming an influential social circle in the Santa Monica Hills that included figures from film and literature. His legacy endures both for the literary quality of his work and for the visibility it gave to personal and social experiences that were marginalized in his time.
