Alexandra Amalie of Bavaria was a princess of the House of Wittelsbach who devoted much of her life to literary work. A daughter of King Ludwig I of Bavaria, her portrait was painted by Joseph Karl Stieler for the gallery of Nymphenburg Palace, a distinction that reinforced her prominence at the Bavarian court. Never married, she held the title of abbess of the convent of the Noble Ladies of St. Anne in Munich and Würzburg, occupying a social and religious role appropriate to her rank. Beginning in 1852 she launched an original body of work and translations: she published stories and collections such as Weihnachtsrosen, Feldblumen, Phantasie- und Lebensbilder and Maiglöckchen; she translated children’s works and narratives from French, including pieces by Arnaud Berquin and texts by Jean-Nicolas Bouilly. Part of the proceeds from her publications was directed to charitable institutions, such as orphanages, and she also contributed to the magazine Jugendblätter. Her literary career coexisted with mental health difficulties reported at the time. She died in 1875 at Nymphenburg Palace and was buried in the crypt of the Theatinerkirche in Munich, remembered as a princess-writer in the cultural life of nineteenth-century Bavaria.
