Antoinette Sasse, born Antoinette Kohn, was notable as a visual artist and an activist in the French Resistance. Trained in drawing and painting, she studied in studios such as Othon Friesz’s and moved in artistic circles, exhibiting in important salons and producing portraits aimed at a fashionable clientele. Her social position and financial means supported an active cultural life and brought influential contacts in the arts and industry. During the Second World War, Sasse became a close collaborator of Jean Moulin: she confided in him, helped to safeguard documents and served as his assistant when he returned to clandestine work, as well as acquiring artworks to provide cover for activities connected to Moulin’s gallery. Persecution of Jews forced her to spend time in Switzerland, where she maintained links with resistance networks. After the war, she took part in inquiries into the circumstances of Jean Moulin’s capture and supported proceedings related to his betrayal. She bequeathed part of her estate and collections to the city of Paris, helping to create the museum that preserves the memory of the Resistance. She received decorations for her role in the fight against the occupation.
