Anton Köllisch was a German chemist connected to the pharmaceutical industry in the early 20th century, known for filing the patent for the compound later identified as MDMA. While working in Darmstadt for the Merck company, Köllisch submitted the patent application on 24 December 1912; the document was granted in 1914. The patented compound, methylenedioxymethylamphetamine, emerged from pharmaceutical research of the period and was originally assessed for its physiological properties, with contemporary sources noting possible military applications. Köllisch did not live to see the later impact of MDMA on medicine and popular culture, having died in 1916. His work has since become linked to the history of psychoactive substance development and has been the subject of historical studies and reconstructions that reassess MDMA’s origins and course using original documents. The patent record remains the principal trace of his scientific contribution.
