Anton LaVey (born Howard Stanton Levey) was a central figure in twentieth-century American occultism, known for founding the Church of Satan in 1966 and serving as that organization's High Priest. Author of influential works such as The Satanic Bible and The Satanic Witch, LaVey articulated a religious and ritual vision that challenged traditional Christian values and promoted a theatrical aesthetic that helped bring his church to media attention. His career combined artistic and performative pursuits — he worked as an organist and musician and cultivated a public image through interviews, appearances, and public rituals that drew the attention of radio, newspapers, and San Francisco cultural circles. Parts of his personal biography were later questioned: accounts of circus experience, service in police forces, and family background showed discrepancies between official versions and independent investigations. LaVey's legacy is twofold: on one hand, he institutionalized modern Satanism as an organized movement and influenced various strands of contemporary occultism; on the other, he left a controversial biography whose personal mythology — partly deliberately crafted — became the subject of debate among followers, biographers, and critics.
