Jennifer Lorraine Gibbons was one of the identical twins known as “The Silent Twins,” whose lives and literary work attracted public attention because of their psychological singularity and tragic outcome. Together with her sister June, Jennifer developed from childhood an almost exclusive mode of communication between the two, which led to school isolation and a private language. That private repertory fed an intense creative output: both sisters wrote novels, plays and short stories, often set in the United States and characterized by dark themes and deviant behavior. The pair sought literary recognition through self-publishing and writing courses, but saw little commercial success. At the same time, episodes of delinquency and mental-health problems resulted in the sisters’ confinement at Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital, where they remained for more than a decade under heavy medication. The prolonged stay and drug treatment were identified by June as factors in Jennifer’s loss of speech and creative apathy. The case became the subject of press coverage and television dramatizations, prompting debate about diagnosis, social isolation and psychiatric management. In 1993 Jennifer died suddenly of acute myocarditis in circumstances that remain unclear; her death and the sisters’ literary legacy continue to prompt academic and cultural interest.
