Antony Charles Robert Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon, was a British photographer whose career was prominent in fashion, portrait, and institutional photography. Trained in architecture at Cambridge, he redirected his professional life toward image-making and became one of the United Kingdom’s most respected photographers in the 1960s and 1970s. He worked for publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair and produced portraits of notable public figures, including members of the royal family and cultural personalities. Snowdon also became a public figure through his marriage to Princess Margaret, a connection that increased his visibility and at times involved him in controversial episodes that require caution in description. In addition to his photographic work, he produced a documentary that won an Emmy and took part in public life as a member of the House of Lords from 1999, when he received a life peerage. His legacy is preserved in institutions such as the National Portrait Gallery, which mounted a retrospective of his work in 2001, and in the influence he exerted on contemporary British portraiture. Known for combining artistic sensitivity with access to circles of power, Snowdon remained notable both for the technical quality of his work and for the public role he played throughout his life.
