Maria Elisabeth of Austria (1680–1741) was an archduchess and governor of the Austrian Netherlands from 1725 to 1741, appointed by her brother, Emperor Charles VI, to succeed Prince Eugene of Savoy. A daughter of Leopold I and Eleonor Magdalene of Neuburg, she was noted for her erudite education and fluency in several languages—qualities that underpinned her political and administrative work.
As regent she built a reputation as a firm administrator who was relatively popular with the local elites, pursuing a policy of independence that was not always welcomed in Vienna. Using her own financial resources, she maintained a sophisticated court that fostered cultural and musical life in the territories, patronizing musicians such as Jean-Joseph Fiocco and supporting artistic commissions.
In summer she resided at the Mariemont Palace, designed by Jean-André Anneessens. She died unexpectedly at Morlanwelz in 1741; initially buried in Brussels, she was transferred in 1749 to the Imperial Crypt in Vienna, where she lies beside her brother Charles. Her legacy is one of cultivated, autonomist governance within the Habsburg domains.
