Christopher Plummer was a Canadian actor whose career spanned seven decades, with notable work in theatre, film, and television. Trained in the practical environment of Montreal repertory theatre, he established himself on Broadway in the 1950s and led both Shakespearean and modern classics, playing title roles in Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear and Cyrano, as well as giving notable performances in plays such as J.B., No Man’s Land and Inherit the Wind. In film, he achieved worldwide recognition as Captain Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1965), though he maintained an ambivalent relationship with the film. His versatility and longevity brought him broad critical acclaim and major awards over the course of his life. Plummer won an Academy Award, two Tonys, two Emmys, among other honors, and is a member of the rare Triple Crown of Acting, the only Canadian to do so. He won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Beginners (2010) at age 82, setting a record at the time for oldest acting winner. Fluent in English and French, he originally trained in piano before committing exclusively to an acting career. His work is remembered for its consistency on stage and his ability to move between classical repertoire and contemporary roles.
