Mary Todd Lincoln was First Lady of the United States during Abraham Lincoln’s presidency (1861–1865). Born into a wealthy Kentucky family, she received a polished education at a finishing school, mastered French, and learned the social conventions of the elite. Settled in Springfield, Illinois, she became a central figure in local social and political life and married Lincoln in 1842. As the head of Executive Household ceremonies, Mary organized receptions and redecorated the presidential residence—activities that drew both admiration and criticism because of their high cost. During the Civil War she worked to sustain national morale and to support her husband’s political career. She sat beside Abraham at Ford’s Theatre when he was assassinated in 1865, an event that profoundly marked her life. Her personal life was marked by tragedy: of four children, only Robert survived both parents, and the successive losses contributed to physical and mental health problems. After a psychiatric hospitalization in 1875, she spent years traveling in Europe and ended her days in Springfield, where she was buried in the Lincoln Tomb alongside her husband and three of their children. Her legacy combines an active public role, social controversy, and a private life marked by suffering and resilience.
