Maria Immaculata Clementina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies was a princess of the Two Sicilies by birth and an Archduchess of Austria by marriage. A daughter of King Ferdinand II and Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria, she was raised in a court environment marked by the fall of the Neapolitan kingdom during the Expedition of the Thousand, when the family took refuge in Rome at the Quirinal Palace at the invitation of Pope Pius IX.
In 1861 she married Archduke Karl Salvator of Austria-Tuscany, acquiring titles in Tuscany, Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia. The marriage strengthened ties between dynastic branches and produced a large family: the couple had ten children, thereby maintaining familial influence at the central courts of Europe.
Known for her beauty and reserved character, Maria Immaculata moved within imperial etiquette and the social networks of contemporary nobility — she appeared, for example, in Empress Elisabeth of Austria’s album of photographs of beautiful women. She also received honors such as Dame of the Order of the Star.
Her legacy is chiefly dynastic and representative: she embodies the marital alliances among 19th‑century royal houses and the role of women in upholding traditions and networks of European power.
