Maria Immaculata Clementina of Bourbon-Two Sicilies was a princess of the Two Sicilies by birth and an Archduchess of Austria by marriage. The daughter of Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies and Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria, she belonged to a royal family whose fortunes were overturned by the Expedition of the Thousand, an episode that forced the family into exile in Rome under papal protection. In 1861 she married Archduke Karl Salvator of Austria-Tuscany, also taking the titles Princess of Tuscany, Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia. The couple had ten children, further linking the European dynasties of the nineteenth century through marital alliances. Described as modest and reserved in childhood, Maria Immaculata became noted for her beauty and presence at the Austrian court; she was included in Empress Elisabeth of Austria’s album of beautiful women. She remains a representative figure of the interconnections among European royal houses in the post‑Napoleonic era and in the decades preceding the continent’s major political transformations.
