Archduke Karl of Austria-Este was an archduke of the House of Habsburg and a military commander of the Austrian Empire during the Napoleonic period and the following decades. Born into a family that united branches from the duchies of Modena and Massa, he graduated from the Vienna military academy and built a prominent career in the anti‑Napoleonic coalitions, holding important commands in 1805, 1809 and 1815. During the Third Coalition he was commander‑in‑chief of the Austrian forces that were besieged at Ulm; he nevertheless managed to escape with part of the cavalry and to reorganize troops in Bohemia, taking part in operations that tied down enemy divisions before Austerlitz. In 1809 he commanded an army in the campaign against the Duchy of Warsaw, occupying Warsaw after the battle of Raszyn, although he was later forced to withdraw. After the Napoleonic wars he continued in command and administrative roles: in 1816 he was appointed military commander in Hungary and, in 1830, civil and military governor of Galicia, establishing himself in Lviv. He retired to Italy after the revolutions of 1848 and died in 1850; his body was interred in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna.
