Archduke Leopold Johann (Leopold Johann Josef Anton Franz) was the only surviving son of Emperor Charles VI and Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Born amid intense dynastic expectation, his short life reflected the fragility of the lines of succession that affected the House of Habsburg in the early eighteenth century. His existence became central to the succession pressures exerted by the court: the birth of a male heir was seen as assurance of Charles VI’s dynastic continuity.
