Ferdinand Karl, Archduke of Austria (1628–1662), was a member of the House of Habsburg who ruled Further Austria, including Tyrol, from 1646 to 1662. The son of Archduke Leopold V and Claudia de' Medici, he took up government on reaching majority and characterized his reign by personalist and centralizing methods of rule. To sustain a lifestyle regarded as extravagant, he alienated assets and territorial rights, including revenues from the cession of possessions west of the Rhine. In 1652 he took part in delineating borders in the Grisons (Graubünden). His government was also marked by a controversial judicial episode: Chancellor Wilhelm Biener was tried in secret and executed in 1651, an event that underscores the authoritarian nature of the archducal administration. A patron of the arts, Ferdinand Karl fostered music at court and introduced performances of Italian opera, contributing to the cultural life of Tyrol in the 17th century. Married to Anna de' Medici, he left female offspring, among them Claudia Felicitas, who married Emperor Leopold I.
