Armand du Paty de Clam was a French Army officer and a central figure in the Dreyfus affair, notorious for his role in identifying and accusing Alfred Dreyfus as an alleged traitor. A graduate of Saint‑Cyr, he pursued a career on the General Staff, where he became known as an amateur graphologist — a skill that placed him in charge of the investigation into the bordereau in 1894. He was the one who obtained Dreyfus’s handwriting sample and carried out actions that led to the captain’s arrest and trial.
Although he found no material evidence beyond handwriting analyses, du Paty de Clam compiled the case and supplied the judges with a secret dossier whose existence decisively influenced the conviction. Promoted to lieutenant‑colonel, he later took part in efforts to conceal the true author of the espionage and in exerting pressure on those probing corruption in the case, such as Colonel Picquart.
When the public controversy erupted and irregularities were revealed, he was suspended and subsequently prosecuted; he left the service in 1901. Reinstated to the reserves in 1913, he was wounded in the First World War and died in 1916. His legacy remains linked to the manipulation of military procedures and the central role he played in the greatest civil‑military crisis of the French Third Republic.
