Jeanne Louise Calment was a French supercentenarian recognized as the oldest person ever documented, reaching 122 years and 164 days. Born and living in Arles in southern France, she became publicly known at age 113, when journalists began recording her memories of events from the 19th and 20th centuries, including Vincent van Gogh’s time in the town. Her exceptional longevity was certified and entered the Guinness Book of Records; Calment remains the only person verified to have reached ages 120, 121, and 122. She lived a life of relative economic comfort, pursued hobbies such as tennis, cycling, and piano, and endured family tragedies—surviving her husband, losing her daughter while young, and later losing her grandson. In her final years she lived in a nursing home and became the subject of documentaries and public appearances, including acting in a film at age 114. In 2018 questions about her identity resurfaced, prompting debate among researchers, but they did not change the historical recognition of her longevity. Her case remains a reference in studies of extreme aging and human longevity.
