W. H. Auden was one of the most important Anglo‑American poets of the twentieth century, whose work spanned decades and styles. He became a central figure in the English literary scene in the 1930s, when his poems combined polished technique, political urgency and a generational voice that addressed sexuality, morals and social critique. Collections such as Poems (1930) and The Orators (1932), along with individual poems — including "September 1, 1939," "The Shield of Achilles" and "The Age of Anxiety" — established his reputation and earned him the Pulitzer Prize.

Auden also worked as an essayist, playwright and opera librettist, notably collaborating with Christopher Isherwood and, later, with Chester Kallman, with whom he worked on projects such as the libretto for Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. From 1939 he settled in the United States, where he began to explore religious and ethical themes in his poetry, shifting the political tone of his earlier work.

A teacher and lecturer, he taught at North American universities and served as Professor of Poetry at Oxford (1956–1961). His influence endures across later literary generations and in the formal and thematic range of a body of work that engages with history, the psyche and faith.
