Arnold Bennett was an English novelist and journalist, notable for his large literary output from the late 19th century into the early decades of the 20th century. The author of dozens of novels, short stories and plays, he reached a wide readership with works set in a fictionalized version of the Staffordshire Potteries — the “Five Towns” — where he depicted life and social change in England’s industrial world. His best‑known titles include Anna of the Five Towns, The Old Wives’ Tale, Clayhanger and Riceyman Steps.
Raised in a modest household, he began his working life in office jobs and then in journalism, becoming an editor before devoting himself full time to writing. He spent important periods in France and also worked as a dramatist and screenwriter; during the First World War he briefly headed a department at the Ministry of Information.
Bennett believed literature should be accessible to a general readership and criticized closed literary circles, a stance that won him wide popularity but also the scorn of some modernists. After decades of varying attention, 20th‑century critical studies led to reassessments that established several of his novels as significant works of the English canon.
