Jacques-Arsène d'Arsonval was a French physician, physicist and inventor whose work chiefly influenced electrophysiology and electrical measuring instruments. He is remembered for developing the moving-coil galvanometer and the thermocouple ammeter, devices that became essential for measuring weak currents and for the experimental advance of electricity in the 19th century. As a researcher, d'Arsonval studied the effects of electric current on living organisms and collaborated with figures such as Nikola Tesla, helping to establish electrophysiology as a distinct discipline. He published numerous articles on the use of natural forces, the physiological actions of alternating currents, and research on hydroelectric cells and electrical discharges. Already in the 1880s he proposed harvesting the oceans’ thermal energy, anticipating ideas about exploiting thermal gradients that were later developed by his students. Beyond his scientific output, he distinguished himself as a popularizer of electrification as a democratizing force that could transform industry and society. His legacy lies both in the instrumental inventions that enabled precise measurements and in his forward-looking ideas about renewable sources and his influence on subsequent generations of engineers and scientists.
