Arthur IV MacArthur

Arthur MacArthur IV is best known as the heir of one of the United States’ most celebrated military families, the only son of General Douglas MacArthur and the grandson of General Arthur MacArthur Jr. Born in the Philippines while his father served as a military advisor, his childhood was closely followed by the international press because of his father’s prestige and campaigns during World War II. As a child he experienced dramatic events — the evacuation from the Philippines, moves to Australia and later to Tokyo — that drew extensive journalistic attention to his daily life and musical abilities. While still young he was described in the press as a musical prodigy, and he was also the subject of expectations that he would pursue a military career, a plan that never came to pass. A 1961 Columbia graduate in English, Arthur gradually withdrew from the public eye. He worked as a concert pianist and writer and adopted a low profile in adulthood, at times using an assumed name. Public interest in his life stems less from prominent public achievements than from his family legacy, his early exposure, and his choice of a private life.
