Artie Shaw, born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky, was an American clarinetist, big band leader, composer, and author whose career defined the swing era of the 1930s and 1940s. Recognized as one of jazz’s most notable clarinetists, he led one of the country’s most popular orchestras and achieved major commercial success—his 1938 recording of “Begin the Beguine” became a defining hit of the period.

Shaw was known for his pursuit of innovation: he incorporated string instruments and symphonic elements into the big band repertoire, anticipating ideas later associated with the Third Stream blending jazz and classical music. This experimental impulse also appeared in his use of small ensembles within his bands, such as the Gramercy Five, and in instrumentations that were unconventional for the time.

Over his career he led and introduced prominent musicians, hired singers including Billie Holiday—becoming a pioneer by touring with a Black vocalist in his ensemble—and influenced later generations. Despite his successes, a fraught relationship with the music industry and the commercial circuit led him to disband several groups and gradually withdraw from public musical life, retiring permanently by the mid-1950s.
